The Akai APC40 from AKAI Professional is a USB MIDI controller built for hands-on control of Ableton Live. Its driver connection allows Windows to exchange MIDI messages with the controller, supporting clip launching, mixer adjustments, and control feedback. The APC40 normally uses Windows’ built-in USB MIDI support, so a separate manufacturer driver is generally not required.
Key Features
- USB MIDI communication: Connects the APC40’s buttons, faders, and rotary controls to compatible music software.
- Ableton Live integration: Enables MIDI communication for the APC40 control-surface setup, including clip launching and mixer control when configured in Live.
- Visual feedback: Supports MIDI messages from compatible software to the controller’s illuminated buttons and LED rings, helping you track mapped controls and session activity.
- Windows-native connection: Normally relies on the operating system’s MIDI support rather than a dedicated audio driver. The APC40 controls software; it does not function as an audio interface.
How to Install
- Check compatibility before downloading. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, review AKAI Professional’s guidance for the original APC40 and your version of Ableton Live. Do not confuse it with the APC40 mkII when selecting documentation or software.
- Connect and power the controller. Attach the appropriate power adapter, connect the APC40 directly to a USB port on your computer, and switch it on. Avoid an unpowered USB hub during initial setup.
- Allow Windows to detect the device. Windows should load its built-in USB MIDI support automatically. If you have downloaded an additional package, install it only after confirming that AKAI Professional lists it for your exact model and Windows version.
- Configure your music software. Open Ableton Live’s MIDI settings, select APC40 as the control surface, and assign the corresponding MIDI input and output ports. Menu labels may vary between Live versions.
- Test the controls and feedback. Open a Live Set and check that clip buttons, faders, and LED indicators respond as expected. If the controller is missing, restart the software, try another USB cable or port, and check Windows Device Manager for connection errors.
For sound playback or recording problems, check your audio interface’s driver separately—the APC40’s MIDI connection does not handle audio input or output.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Installer fails or stalls: Run the Akai installer as Administrator, extract the download fully before launching, and temporarily disable antivirus/Windows SmartScreen if it blocks the setup. Confirm you are using the correct 32/64-bit package.
- APC40 not detected: Connect directly to a USB 2.0 port, not a hub, and try a known-good USB cable. In Device Manager, check for “Unknown Device” or “USB MIDI”; uninstall the entry, reboot, then reconnect the APC40.
- Driver/version conflicts: Remove older Akai or generic USB-MIDI drivers and duplicate APC40 entries in Device Manager, then reboot. In your DAW, select the APC40 as the control surface and MIDI input rather than a generic “USB Audio Device.”
