The D-Link DIR-655 is a wireless router that connects computers and other devices to a shared network and internet connection. Unlike a USB network adapter, it does not require a dedicated Windows driver: Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 communicate with it through your computer’s Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter driver. If you are troubleshooting a connection, check that adapter’s driver before looking for router software.
Key Features
- Ethernet connectivity: A working Ethernet adapter driver lets your Windows PC connect to the DIR-655 through one of its LAN ports.
- Wireless network access: Your computer’s Wi-Fi driver handles wireless discovery and connections, provided the adapter supports the router’s wireless settings.
- Connection troubleshooting: Updating the correct network adapter driver may resolve PC-side problems such as missing networks, adapter errors, or intermittent disconnections.
- Browser-based configuration: Router settings are managed through the DIR-655’s web interface rather than a Windows device driver. Router firmware is separate software and must match the unit’s hardware revision.
How to Install
- Identify the software you need. Open Device Manager and expand “Network adapters” to find your PC’s Ethernet or wireless adapter. For router firmware, check the hardware revision on the DIR-655’s label instead.
- Choose the correct download. Obtain the network adapter driver from your PC or adapter manufacturer, selecting a version compatible with Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7 as appropriate. Do not assume a download labeled “DIR-655 driver” is necessary for your router.
- Install the adapter driver. Run the manufacturer’s installer and follow its instructions. If the package contains driver files without an installer, use Device Manager’s “Update driver” option and browse to the extracted folder.
- Restart and reconnect. Restart Windows if prompted, then connect an Ethernet cable to a router LAN port or join your wireless network using its network name and password. Test access to the router and the internet.
- Update router firmware only if needed. Use firmware specifically intended for your DIR-655 hardware revision and region, following D-Link’s instructions. Perform the update over a wired connection and keep the router powered on throughout the process.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Firmware upload fails: Confirm the file matches your DIR-655 hardware revision (A/B/C) and use a wired Ethernet connection to a LAN port. Do not power off during the update; if it stalls, retry after a factory reset.
- Router not detected: Verify the PC is connected to a LAN port, router LEDs are on, and you are using the correct address (default 192.168.0.1). Try another Ethernet cable/port and disable Wi-Fi on the PC.
- Version conflicts: Do not install firmware for a different hardware revision or older firmware unless recovering. Note the current version, reset to factory defaults, then update and reconfigure.
