The Com0com Serial Port Emulator driver creates paired virtual COM ports in Windows, allowing serial applications to exchange data without physical serial hardware. It is useful for testing software, connecting programs that expect a COM-port interface, and developing serial communication workflows on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7.

Key Features

  • Paired virtual serial ports: Data sent to one endpoint becomes available at the other, providing a software-based alternative to a physical null-modem cable.
  • Compatibility with serial applications: Lets programs that use standard Windows COM-port interfaces communicate through virtual connections.
  • Configurable port names: The accompanying setup tools let you assign COM-port names that suit your applications and avoid conflicts with existing ports.
  • Hardware-free testing: Supports troubleshooting and development scenarios where connecting real serial devices would be inconvenient or unnecessary.

How to Install

  1. Check your Windows configuration. Confirm your Windows version and whether your system is 32-bit or 64-bit. Choose a Com0com Serial Port Emulator package intended for that configuration, and review any compatibility or driver-signing notes before proceeding.
  1. Download and prepare the package. Save the driver archive or installer, then extract it if required. Close applications that may be using serial ports so they do not interfere with setup.
  1. Run setup as an administrator. Launch the installer with administrative permissions and follow its instructions. If Windows blocks the driver because of signature or security requirements, look for a compatible signed package rather than disabling system protections.
  1. Create or configure a virtual port pair. Open the included configuration utility and add a pair if one was not created during installation. Assign unused COM-port names and note which two endpoints belong together.
  1. Connect and test your applications. Select one endpoint in the sending application and the paired endpoint in the receiving application. Configure serial settings as required by your software, then send test data to verify the connection. Restart Windows if setup requests it.

The emulator provides a virtual connection between applications; it does not replace a USB-to-serial adapter driver or create a physical serial connector. If an application cannot find a port, check the assigned port name, driver installation status, and whether another program already has that endpoint open.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Installer fails or rolls back: Run the com0com setup as Administrator and close apps using COM ports. On 64-bit Windows, use the signed build; if Windows blocks the driver, temporarily disable driver signature enforcement only for testing, then reinstall and reboot. Remove any partial com0com entry in Device Manager first.
  • Virtual ports not detected: Open Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT) and check for "com0com" devices; if missing, run `setupc.exe` as admin and use "List" then "Reinstall" or recreate the pair. Ensure the com0com service is running and reboot after pairing.
  • Version/port conflicts: Uninstall older com0com and other virtual serial drivers before installing; delete stale pairs with `setupc remove` and reboot. If apps still see old COM numbers, reassign non-conflicting COM names in `setupc` and avoid ports already used by Bluetooth/USB serial adapters.
