The Cisco USB Console driver lets a Windows computer communicate with the USB console port on compatible Cisco networking equipment. It creates a virtual COM port that terminal software can use for local configuration, troubleshooting, and access to the device’s command-line interface.

Key Features

  • USB-to-serial console access: Provides the connection needed to manage supported Cisco switches, routers, and other equipment through their USB console ports.
  • Virtual COM port support: Makes the console connection available to terminal applications that support serial sessions, such as PuTTY or Tera Term.
  • Local device management: Enables console access without relying on the equipment’s IP address or an active network connection.
  • Windows connectivity: Driver packages may support Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Check the selected package’s compatibility details and your computer’s architecture before downloading.

How to Install

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check your Cisco equipment’s documentation to verify that its USB console interface requires this driver. Select a package intended for your Windows version and system architecture.
  2. Download and extract the package. Save the driver to your computer and extract it if it is compressed. Keep the console cable disconnected during installation unless the included instructions say otherwise.
  3. Install the driver. Run the supplied installer with administrator permissions and follow the prompts. If the package contains driver files rather than an installer, use Device Manager’s Update driver option to browse to the extracted folder.
  4. Connect and identify the port. Attach the computer to the Cisco device’s USB console port using a compatible data cable. Open Device Manager and look under Ports (COM & LPT) for the assigned COM number.
  5. Start a console session. Open your terminal application, select a serial connection, and choose the assigned COM port. Use the console settings specified in the Cisco device’s documentation, then open the session and press Enter to check for a prompt.

If no COM port appears, try another USB port or a known-good data cable, then check Device Manager for driver warnings. This driver is for console management; it does not provide Ethernet connectivity or replace a network adapter driver.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Device not detected: Confirm you are using a Cisco USB console cable, plug it directly into a rear USB port, and check Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT) or Other devices. If it appears as unknown, install the Cisco USB Console driver as administrator and rescan.
  • Driver install fails: Run the installer as administrator. If Windows rejects the INF, use Device Manager > Update driver > Browse and point to the extracted driver folder. Match the driver to 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
  • Version/COM conflicts: Uninstall older Cisco USB Console driver entries, remove hidden COM ports in Device Manager, reboot, then install the latest driver. Reassign the COM port if another adapter is using it.
