The CDC Serial driver enables Windows to communicate with compatible USB devices that use the Communications Device Class (CDC) serial interface. When the correct driver is installed, the device can appear as a virtual COM port, allowing supported software to exchange data with connected hardware. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, choose the package supplied by the manufacturer that matches your device and operating system.

Key Features

  • Virtual COM port access: Lets compatible applications communicate with the connected device through a standard serial-port interface.
  • USB device recognition: Helps Windows identify supported CDC Serial hardware and associate it with the appropriate driver.
  • Application connectivity: Supports serial communication used by configuration utilities, diagnostic tools, and other compatible programs.
  • Windows integration: Makes the device available through Windows device-management tools, where you can check its status and assigned COM port.

How to Install

  1. Confirm the device and Windows version. Open Device Manager and locate CDC Serial, which may appear under Other devices if no suitable driver is installed. Check its hardware IDs under Properties > Details, then confirm that the driver package supports those IDs and your Windows version and architecture.
  1. Download and prepare the driver. Obtain the matching package from the manufacturer or a trusted distribution source. Extract compressed files before starting, and review any included instructions for connection requirements.
  1. Run the installer or install manually. If the package includes a setup program, run it and follow the prompts. Otherwise, right-click the device in Device Manager, select Update driver, and choose the option to browse your computer for drivers. Select the extracted folder.
  1. Reconnect and verify recognition. Restart Windows if prompted, then reconnect the device. In Device Manager, confirm that it appears without a warning icon. For devices configured as serial ports, look under Ports (COM & LPT) and note the COM number.
  1. Configure your application. Select the assigned COM port in your software and apply the communication settings specified by the device manufacturer. If the connection fails, check the USB cable, port selection, and driver compatibility before reinstalling.

Some CDC-compatible devices can use a driver included with Windows, while others require a manufacturer-specific package. Always follow the instructions for your particular hardware rather than assuming that every CDC Serial download is interchangeable.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or rolls back: Use the manufacturer’s signed CDC Serial driver for your Windows version and architecture. Uninstall any existing CDC/ACM driver, disconnect the device, reboot, then run the installer as administrator before reconnecting.
  • Device not detected or no COM port: Check the USB cable and port, and confirm the device appears in Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT) or as an unknown device. Try another USB port/cable and verify the USB VID/PID matches the manufacturer’s CDC device.
  • Version or COM port conflicts: Remove old or duplicate CDC Serial entries and stale COM ports in Device Manager, including hidden devices. Install only the manufacturer’s current package; if Windows Update replaces it, roll back the driver and block automatic updates for that device.
