Bluetooth RFCOMM enables serial-style communication over a Bluetooth connection, allowing compatible software and paired devices to exchange data without a physical serial cable. Its driver supports this communication layer within the Windows Bluetooth stack; choose a package intended for your hardware and version of Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7.
Key Features
- Serial communication over Bluetooth: Supports RFCOMM connections used by compatible accessories and applications that rely on serial data exchange.
- Virtual COM port support: Allows supported Bluetooth services to work with software that expects a COM port, depending on the device and Windows configuration.
- Windows Bluetooth integration: Works alongside the Bluetooth adapter driver to help Windows manage supported communication services.
- Support for compatible peripherals: Enables data connections with devices such as serial adapters, scanners, and other equipment that explicitly supports RFCOMM.
How to Install
- Check your Windows version and hardware. Confirm whether your system runs Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, and check its system type. In Device Manager, review the Bluetooth adapter and any Bluetooth RFCOMM entry showing a warning.
- Choose the appropriate driver package. Use a compatible package supplied by the manufacturer for your Bluetooth adapter or computer. RFCOMM support is often included with Windows, so a separate RFCOMM download may not be necessary.
- Install or update the driver. If the package includes an installer, run it and follow the prompts. For extracted driver files, open Device Manager, right-click the relevant device, select Update driver, and browse to the extracted folder.
- Restart and reconnect. Restart Windows if prompted, turn on Bluetooth, and pair the peripheral if it is not already paired. Make sure the accessory is in the correct mode for its serial communication service.
- Verify the connection. Check Device Manager for remaining warnings, then test the device in its intended application. If the application requires a COM port, select the port assigned to the Bluetooth service.
If communication still fails, check that the peripheral supports RFCOMM and that its required Bluetooth service is enabled. Updating the Bluetooth adapter driver may help, but it cannot add RFCOMM support to an accessory that does not provide it.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or stalls: Ensure the Bluetooth radio is on and run the vendor installer as administrator. Remove stale RFCOMM COM ports in Device Manager, reboot, then rerun the installer.
- Device not detected: Confirm the Bluetooth device is paired and its Serial Port/RFCOMM service is enabled. Restart the Bluetooth Support Service and rescan for hardware.
- Version conflicts: Uninstall older Bluetooth/RFCOMM drivers and delete unused COM ports. Install the vendor package matching your Windows version and architecture, then reboot before re-pairing.
