The ATI Radeon HD 3870 driver lets Windows communicate with your graphics card, enabling proper display resolution, hardware-accelerated graphics, and access to supported display settings. Because this GPU uses legacy ATI software, choosing a compatible driver is more important than simply selecting the newest download.
Key Features
- Correct display configuration: Enables supported resolutions, refresh rates, and color settings that may be unavailable with a basic Windows display driver.
- Graphics acceleration: Provides DirectX and OpenGL support for compatible games and applications, within the Radeon HD 3870’s hardware capabilities.
- Multiple-monitor controls: Supports configuration of connected displays, including extended desktops, where supported by the card’s connections and driver package.
- ATI display utilities: Compatible Catalyst packages may include controls for image quality, scaling, and other graphics options.
Legacy driver options exist for Windows 7 and Windows 8. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are not officially supported by ATI’s legacy driver releases for this card; basic display output or an older driver working does not guarantee full acceleration or reliable operation. A graphics driver also cannot make this GPU meet Windows 11’s graphics requirements.
How to Install
- Confirm your hardware and Windows version. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and check for ATI Radeon HD 3870. If Windows shows a generic adapter instead, check its hardware IDs. Verify whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Choose a matching driver package. Check that the package explicitly lists your graphics card and Windows version. Do not assume a download labeled for newer Radeon products supports this legacy model.
- Prepare for installation. Close games and graphics applications, and create a restore point if System Protection is enabled. If replacing a problematic driver, keep a copy of your previous working installer.
- Run the installer. Extract the downloaded package if necessary, launch setup with administrator permissions, and follow the prompts. If setup reports an unsupported operating system or hardware, stop rather than forcing installation.
- Restart and verify. Reboot your PC, check Device Manager for warnings, and confirm your preferred resolution in Windows display settings. If problems appear, use Roll Back Driver when available or restore the previous working configuration.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or rolls back: The HD 3870 uses legacy Catalyst 13.1, which can fail on Windows 10/11. Run the installer as administrator in Windows 7 compatibility mode, or extract it and update via Device Manager by pointing to the INF. Remove old drivers with DDU first.
- Device not detected: Seat the card firmly, connect its 6-pin PCIe power cable, and set PCIe as the primary display in BIOS. Test another slot or PSU if it still does not appear in Device Manager.
- Version conflicts: Windows Update may install a generic WDDM driver that blocks Catalyst setup. Uninstall current display drivers with DDU, pause driver updates, then install Catalyst 13.1; do not mix it with newer Adrenalin packages.
