The ATEN USB to Serial Bridge driver enables Windows to recognize the adapter and communicate with equipment connected through its serial port. If you use the bridge with a serial printer or another compatible serial device, installing the correct driver helps establish the connection needed to transfer data.
Key Features
- USB-to-serial communication: Allows applications to access compatible serial equipment through a USB connection, useful for computers without a built-in serial port.
- COM port access: Makes the adapter available as a Windows COM port that you can select in printer settings or serial communication software.
- Configurable connection settings: Supports serial parameters such as baud rate, parity, and flow control, which must match the requirements of the connected equipment.
- Windows driver options: Suitable driver packages are available for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Choose the package that matches your adapter model, hardware revision, and operating system architecture.
How to Install
- Check your adapter and Windows version. Confirm the exact ATEN model using the label on the adapter. Check whether your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, and verify that the selected driver supports your hardware revision.
- Download and extract the driver. Save the appropriate ATEN USB to Serial Bridge driver package to your computer. If it comes in a compressed folder, extract its contents before starting installation.
- Install the driver package. Run the included installer, if provided, and follow its prompts. Connect or disconnect the adapter when instructed. If there is no installer, connect the adapter, open Device Manager, right-click its entry, and select Update driver to browse to the extracted driver folder.
- Confirm the COM port assignment. After installation, check Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT). Note the assigned COM number and confirm that the adapter appears without a warning icon. Restart Windows if prompted.
- Configure and test your equipment. Select the assigned COM port in your printer configuration or communication application. Match the serial settings to the connected device, then run a test print or communication check.
For a serial printer, the bridge driver handles the USB-to-serial connection; it does not replace the printer’s own driver. You may need both installed before printing works correctly.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or rolls back: Run the ATEN installer as administrator with the adapter unplugged, then connect it when prompted. Check Device Manager for a signed ATEN driver; avoid forcing an unsigned INF.
- Device not detected / no COM port: Try a different USB port and cable, then check Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT) or Unknown devices. Uninstall any yellow-bang entry, rescan, and confirm the ATEN USB-to-Serial Bridge appears.
- Driver or COM-port conflict: Remove older USB-serial drivers and hidden COM ports in Device Manager (View > Show hidden devices), then reinstall the ATEN driver. If the COM number is in use, change it under Port Settings > Advanced.
