Question 1

Install fails or setup exits early?

Accepted Answer

The WD800U017 is a USB 2.0 mass-storage drive, so Windows usually needs no separate driver. Run any WD installer as administrator, disconnect other WD/USB drives, and let Windows install its built-in USB mass-storage driver.

Question 2

Drive not detected?

Accepted Answer

Connect the WD800U017 directly to a rear USB port, not a hub; try a known-good USB cable and confirm any included power adapter is connected. Check Disk Management for an unassigned or offline disk before reinstalling drivers.

Question 3

Driver/version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Remove older WD software or duplicate USB mass-storage entries in Device Manager, then reconnect the drive. Avoid forcing a third-party driver if Windows already recognizes the WD800U017 as a USB disk.
