Question 1

Install fails or stalls?

Accepted Answer

The WD5000ME is a USB mass-storage drive and usually needs no separate driver. If WD software fails, uninstall older WD SmartWare/SES utilities, reboot, and connect to a rear USB 2.0 port before reinstalling.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Try a different USB cable and direct port (no hub). Check Disk Management for an unlettered or offline disk; assign a drive letter or bring it online. Avoid USB 3.0 hubs if the enclosure is USB 2.0-only.

Question 3

Version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Remove duplicate WD utilities and outdated USB mass-storage drivers, then update the motherboard chipset/USB drivers. Do not flash firmware unless WD specifically lists the WD5000ME and current firmware version.
