Question 1

Install fails?

Accepted Answer

The WD5000H1U usually needs no separate driver—Windows uses its built-in USB mass-storage driver. If WD setup fails, run it as administrator, use a rear USB 2.0 port, disconnect other external drives, and install only the WD utility/firmware needed.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Try a different USB cable/port and the supplied power adapter; avoid unpowered hubs. Check Disk Management for an offline or unallocated disk, and test eSATA/FireWire ports if available.

Question 3

Version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Remove older WD SmartWare/SES entries and any forced mass-storage driver, then let Windows reinstall the device via Device Manager. Update motherboard USB/chipset drivers rather than using an outdated WD driver package.
