Question 1

Install fails or drive not listed in Device Manager?

Accepted Answer

The WD5000BPVT is a bare 2.5" SATA HDD and normally uses the standard Windows AHCI/storage driver. Check the SATA cable/port or USB enclosure, confirm BIOS detects the drive, and install the correct motherboard chipset/storage driver—not a generic WD driver.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

If using a USB adapter/enclosure, verify it supports 2.5" SATA and has enough power. Open Disk Management and initialize/format the drive if it appears there; try another cable/port.

Question 3

Version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Remove older WD SES/SmartWare or third-party storage drivers, reboot, and let Windows use its inbox driver or the vendor chipset driver. Apply WD firmware only if it explicitly matches WD5000BPVT.
