Question 1

Install fails or “driver not found”?

Accepted Answer

The WD1600U017 is a USB mass-storage drive and usually needs no separate WD driver. Run any WD installer as administrator, disconnect other USB drives, and only install the WD SES driver if Device Manager shows an unknown WD device. Reboot before retrying.

Question 2

Drive not detected?

Accepted Answer

Try a different USB port and cable; avoid unpowered hubs. Check Disk Management—if the disk appears without a drive letter, assign one. If it shows “Unknown/Not Initialized,” do not initialize it if data matters; test on another PC first.

Question 3

Version/driver conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall old WD SES or third-party USB storage drivers, disconnect the drive, reboot, then reconnect and let Windows install its inbox USB mass-storage driver. Avoid driver-updater tools; use Device Manager rollback only if the drive worked before an update.
