Question 1

Install fails or “Unknown device” appears?

Accepted Answer

Use the WD My Book 1110’s original USB cable and a rear motherboard USB port, not a hub. In Device Manager, uninstall the WD My Book entry and any flagged USB Mass Storage controller, then reconnect so Windows reloads its built-in driver.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Confirm the power adapter is connected and the drive is switched on. Test another PC/port. In Disk Management, check whether the disk appears offline or without a drive letter; assign a letter, but do not initialize it if data is present.

Question 3

Driver/version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Remove old WD external-drive utilities and duplicate USB Mass Storage entries. Avoid generic driver-updater tools; this drive normally uses Windows’ inbox USB storage driver. Install WD software only if you need utilities.
