Question 1

Install fails or Code 28?

Accepted Answer

The WD SES driver is often a virtual CD/utility device, not a storage driver. Run the WD installer as administrator, connect the drive directly to a rear USB port, and if Device Manager shows “Other devices > WD SES Device,” right-click and update driver. If no driver is found, install WD Discovery/SmartWare from WD support.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Try another USB cable/port and a powered hub or drive power adapter. Check Disk Management; if the drive appears but SES does not, Windows may be using the native USB mass-storage driver and the SES entry is unnecessary.

Question 3

Version conflicts/multiple entries?

Accepted Answer

In Device Manager enable “Show hidden devices,” uninstall old WD SES/WD Drive entries, reboot, then reinstall the WD software version matching your Windows build. Avoid mixing older SES packages with current WD Discovery.
