Question 1

Install fails or rolls back?

Accepted Answer

Run the SMC installer as administrator and confirm it matches Windows version/architecture (x86 vs x64). Uninstall any previous SMC/Ralink wireless driver, reboot, then reconnect the SMC USB N2 adapter before reinstalling.

Question 2

Adapter not detected?

Accepted Answer

Plug it directly into a USB 2.0 port, not a hub. Check Device Manager for an Unknown Device or Network Adapter entry; if present, update the driver manually and point it to the extracted INF file.

Question 3

Driver/version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Remove older SMC or vendor wireless utilities that may override the driver. If Device Manager shows Code 10/43, uninstall the device and driver package, reboot, and reinstall; otherwise let Windows WLAN AutoConfig manage the connection.
