Question 1

Install fails or shows Code 28?

Accepted Answer

Unzip the driver package fully, then use Device Manager > Update driver > Browse to the folder containing the EN5251B `.inf` file. Do not select the setup `.exe` or a parent folder.

Question 2

Ethernet adapter not detected?

Accepted Answer

Check that the SMC EN5251B appears in Device Manager, even as an unknown network controller. Reseat the card or try another PCI slot, and confirm the slot/NIC is enabled in BIOS.

Question 3

Version conflict or Code 10/31 after a Windows update?

Accepted Answer

Remove the existing SMC/SMSC Ethernet driver, reboot, and install the EN5251B package as administrator. If Windows installs a generic driver, use Have Disk to force the specific EN5251B driver.
