Question 1

Catalyst installer fails or rolls back on modern Windows?

Accepted Answer

The HD 3870 is legacy and has no current AMD driver. Extract the last legacy Catalyst package (13.1 for Win7/8) and run `setup.exe` in Windows 7 compatibility mode as administrator; if needed, disable driver signature enforcement before installing.

Question 2

Card not detected / stuck at Standard VGA?

Accepted Answer

Reseat the PCIe card, connect the 6-pin PCIe power lead, and verify the monitor is on the card’s active output. In Device Manager, update the display adapter manually by pointing to the extracted driver INF.

Question 3

Version conflicts or Code 43 after upgrading?

Accepted Answer

Boot Safe Mode, remove all existing AMD/ATI drivers with DDU, reboot, and install only the legacy Sapphire/AMD package. Prevent Windows Update from reinstalling a generic Radeon driver.
