The Arduino UNO R3 (COM3) driver helps Windows recognize the board’s USB-to-serial interface so programming software can communicate with it. Once the connection is configured, you can upload sketches and exchange serial data between your Arduino board and your computer.

Key Features

  • USB serial communication: Provides the connection needed to upload code and send or receive data through the Arduino IDE’s Serial Monitor.
  • COM port identification: Allows the board to appear under Ports (COM & LPT) in Device Manager. COM3 is the current port designation, but Windows may assign another number when you reconnect the board.
  • Windows compatibility: Supports driver setup for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 when you use a package appropriate for your operating system. Newer Windows versions may recognize the board automatically.
  • Arduino development support: Makes the board’s serial interface available to the Arduino IDE and other compatible applications that communicate over a COM port.

How to Install

  1. Get the appropriate driver. Download the Arduino UNO R3 driver package compatible with your Windows version and extract it if necessary. Use a trusted Arduino source, and keep any included installation instructions available.
  1. Connect the board. Plug the UNO R3 directly into a USB port using a data-capable USB cable. Allow Windows to finish detecting the hardware; if it installs the device successfully, a manual driver update may not be needed.
  1. Install manually if required. Open Device Manager and look under Ports (COM & LPT) or Other devices. Right-click the Arduino or unrecognized device, select Update driver, choose Browse my computer for drivers, and select the extracted driver folder. Follow the prompts.
  1. Choose the board and port. Open the Arduino IDE, select Arduino Uno from the board options, and choose COM3—or the port shown for your board in Device Manager. Close other applications that may be using that port.
  1. Test the connection. Upload the Blink example to confirm communication. If uploading fails, check the selected board and port, try another USB cable, and reconnect the device.

Note: Some UNO-compatible boards use a different USB-to-serial chip, such as a CH340, and require that chip’s driver instead of the standard Arduino UNO R3 driver. Check your board’s hardware if Windows still cannot identify it.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Driver install fails or “unknown device” appears: Use the official Arduino IDE `drivers` folder or Arduino USB driver and run the installer as administrator. For clone Uno R3 boards with CH340, install the matching CH340 driver. Avoid old unsigned INF packages on Windows 11.
  • Board not detected / COM3 missing: Try a known data-capable USB cable and a direct rear USB port. In Device Manager, look for “Arduino Uno” or “USB-SERIAL CH340.” If absent, reinstall the driver and rescan hardware. Confirm Board = Arduino Uno and Port = COM3 in Arduino IDE.
  • COM3 busy or version conflict: Close Serial Monitor, serial plotter, PuTTY, and other apps using COM3. If upload still fails, uninstall the old port driver, reboot, reinstall the current Arduino/CH340 driver, then reselect COM3.
