The Arduino Micro driver helps Windows recognize the board’s USB connection so you can upload sketches and communicate with it through a serial port. Although listed in the Audio category, the Arduino Micro is a microcontroller development board rather than a dedicated sound device; its standard driver supports programming and serial communication, not audio playback.
Key Features
- USB serial communication: Allows compatible software to exchange data with the board, including sensor readings, debugging messages, and commands.
- Sketch upload support: Helps the Arduino development tools identify the connection used to program the Micro’s ATmega32U4 microcontroller.
- COM port identification: Makes the board accessible through a Windows COM port when the appropriate driver is installed and the board is running compatible firmware.
- Windows setup options: Supports driver setup on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with the exact installation requirements depending on your Windows version and Arduino software package. Newer versions of Windows may recognize the serial interface automatically.
How to Install
- Get a compatible driver package. Use Arduino-provided driver files or an Arduino software package that includes them. Confirm that the package supports your Windows version, particularly if you use Windows 7 or 8, where current development tools may not be supported.
- Connect the Arduino Micro. Plug the board directly into a USB port using a data-capable cable. A charge-only cable can power the board without allowing Windows to detect it.
- Check Device Manager. Look under “Ports (COM & LPT)” for the board or a USB serial device. If it appears without a warning symbol, manual driver installation may not be necessary.
- Install the driver if needed. If the board appears as an unknown device or has a warning icon, right-click it, choose “Update driver,” and select “Browse my computer for drivers.” Point Windows to the extracted Arduino driver folder and follow the prompts. Avoid disabling driver-signature checks to install an unverified package.
- Verify the connection. Open a compatible Arduino IDE, select “Arduino Micro” as the board, and choose its COM port. Upload a simple test sketch. If the port is missing, reconnect the board, try another data cable, and check Device Manager again; the port can change when the board enters bootloader mode.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or shows “Unknown device”: On Windows 10/11, let Windows install the built-in USB CDC driver first. If needed, use the drivers bundled with Arduino IDE and run the installer as administrator; avoid third-party driver packs.
- Arduino Micro not detected / no COM port: Use a data-capable USB cable and connect directly, not through a hub. Check Device Manager under Ports. If upload fails, double-tap the Micro’s reset button to enter bootloader mode, then select the new COM port.
- Driver version conflicts or duplicate ports: In Device Manager, enable View > Show hidden devices, uninstall old Arduino USB/serial entries and delete their driver software, then replug the board. Do not mix legacy Arduino drivers with Windows’ usbser.sys.
