The Arduino CH340 driver lets Windows communicate with Arduino-compatible boards that use a CH340 USB-to-serial chip. It creates a virtual COM port so development tools, such as the Arduino IDE, can upload sketches and exchange serial data with the board. Despite sometimes appearing in an Audio category, the CH340 is a serial interface, not an audio device.

Key Features

  • USB-to-serial connectivity: Enables communication between your computer and a connected CH340-based development board.
  • Virtual COM port access: Makes the board available to software that uses serial ports, including the Arduino IDE and serial terminal applications.
  • Sketch uploads and monitoring: Provides the communication interface needed to transfer code and view serial output when the correct board and port settings are selected.
  • Windows support: Suitable driver packages are available for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Choose a version that explicitly supports your operating system and architecture.

How to Install

  1. Check the board and download the appropriate driver. Confirm that your board uses a CH340 chip rather than a different USB interface. Obtain a compatible driver from a trusted source, preferably the chip manufacturer or board supplier, and check its Windows compatibility.
  1. Prepare the driver files. Extract the download if it comes in a compressed archive. If the package includes an installer, run it and approve the Windows administrator prompt when requested.
  1. Complete the installation. Follow the installer instructions. For a package without an installer, connect the board, open Device Manager, right-click its entry, and select “Update driver.” Choose the option to browse your computer and point Windows to the extracted driver folder.
  1. Connect and verify the board. Use a USB cable that supports data transfer. In Device Manager, look under “Ports (COM & LPT)” for a USB serial entry associated with the CH340, and note its COM port number. Restart Windows if prompted.
  1. Select the port in your development software. Open the Arduino IDE, choose the correct board model and COM port, then try uploading a simple sketch. If the port is missing, try another USB cable or socket and check Device Manager for a warning icon before reinstalling the driver.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Driver install fails: Run the CH340 installer as Administrator and allow the unsigned driver prompt. If Windows blocks it, temporarily disable driver signature enforcement, install, then re-enable it.
  • Arduino not detected/no COM port: Use a known data-capable USB cable, not a charge-only one. Try another USB port, check Device Manager for “Unknown device,” then uninstall the device and reinstall the CH340 driver.
  • Version/COM port conflicts: Old CH341SER or Windows-update drivers can conflict. In Device Manager, uninstall the CH340 device and select “Delete driver software,” reboot, then install the latest CH340 driver and reassign the correct COM port.
