The Apple SPI Keyboard driver enables Windows to communicate with the built-in Apple keyboard through its Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) connection. Installing the correct package helps Windows recognize the keyboard and process keystrokes reliably on compatible Apple hardware.
Key Features
- Keyboard detection: Provides the device-specific support Windows needs to identify and use a compatible Apple SPI Keyboard.
- Key input handling: Enables communication between the keyboard hardware and Windows for everyday typing and navigation.
- Apple hardware integration: Works with the keyboard’s SPI connection rather than treating it as a standard external USB keyboard.
- Windows compatibility: Driver packages are available for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; the appropriate version depends on your Apple computer model and installed operating system.
How to Install
- Confirm your device and Windows version. Open Device Manager and look for Apple SPI Keyboard or an unidentified input device. Check your computer model, Windows edition, and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit before choosing a download.
- Select a matching driver package. Use a package that explicitly supports your hardware and Windows version. A driver intended for Windows 10 is not automatically suitable for Windows 7 or Windows 11, even if the device name matches.
- Prepare for installation. Extract the downloaded archive if necessary and save any open work. If the built-in keyboard is not responding, connect a USB keyboard so you can complete the setup.
- Install the driver. Run the included installer and follow its prompts. If the package contains driver files without an installer, right-click the relevant device in Device Manager, select Update driver, choose Browse my computer for drivers, and point Windows to the extracted folder.
- Restart and test the keyboard. After rebooting, check typing, modifier keys, and navigation keys. Confirm that Device Manager no longer displays a warning for the device.
Special functions such as brightness controls, media shortcuts, or keyboard backlighting may require additional Apple support software. If installation fails or the keyboard remains unavailable, verify the device’s hardware ID and package compatibility rather than forcing an unrelated driver.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or rolls back: The Apple SPI Keyboard INF may be unsigned or installed before its parent controller. Run the installer as administrator, disable driver signature enforcement if required, and install the Apple SPI Controller driver first.
- Device not detected: In Device Manager, enable Show hidden devices and check System devices/Keyboards for Apple SPI Controller or an unknown ACPI device. If absent, install the SPI controller/chipset driver, then rescan hardware; the keyboard driver cannot bind without the SPI parent.
- Version conflicts: Windows Update or a mismatched Boot Camp package can replace the driver. Use Roll Back Driver, uninstall the device and driver package, reboot, then reinstall the matching Boot Camp/Apple driver version and pause automatic driver updates.
