The APC UPS driver helps Windows communicate with a compatible APC uninterruptible power supply, allowing the computer to recognize the unit and receive power-status information. Depending on your UPS model and connection type, Windows may use a built-in driver or require an APC software package for monitoring and shutdown management.

Key Features

  • UPS detection: Enables supported Windows systems to identify an APC UPS connected through USB or another supported communication interface.
  • Power-status reporting: Makes information such as battery charge and utility-power availability accessible to Windows or compatible monitoring software, where supported.
  • Shutdown support: Works with supported power-management tools to help shut down your computer safely during an extended outage. Availability depends on the UPS model, software, and configuration.
  • Monitoring integration: Supports communication with compatible APC management software, which may provide alerts, event logs, and additional battery information.

How to Install

  1. Identify your UPS and Windows version. Check the model number on the unit’s label, then confirm whether your computer runs Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7. Verify that the download supports your exact model, Windows version, and system architecture; not every APC package supports all four operating systems.
  1. Choose the appropriate package. Review the package description to determine whether you need a separate driver, APC monitoring software, or only Windows’ built-in UPS support. Use a package from a trusted source and check any model-specific installation instructions.
  1. Connect the communication cable. Power on the UPS and connect its supported data cable to the computer, following the package instructions if they specify a different connection order. A power cable alone does not provide monitoring communication.
  1. Complete the installation. Allow Windows to detect the device. If a separate installer is required, run it with administrator permission and follow the prompts. For a driver-only package, use Device Manager to update the detected device with the extracted driver files. Restart if requested.
  1. Verify detection and configure protection. Check Device Manager for errors, then open the compatible monitoring utility or available Windows power settings. Confirm that UPS information appears and configure shutdown behavior if supported. Follow APC’s recommended procedure for any communication or shutdown test to avoid an unexpected interruption.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or stalls: Disconnect the UPS USB cable, stop any running APC/PowerChute services, run the installer as administrator, then reconnect the UPS after reboot. Confirm the PowerChute version supports your Windows build and UPS model.
  • UPS not detected: Use a direct USB port instead of a hub, try a known-good USB cable, and check Device Manager under Batteries for HID UPS Battery or any unknown USB device. Uninstall the faulty entry and rescan for hardware changes.
  • Version or driver conflicts: Remove older APC software and hidden UPS devices in Device Manager before installing the new package. Run only one APC management tool, and avoid mixing PowerChute with Windows’ native battery driver if the model/software combination does not support it.
