Question 1

Install fails or driver is blocked?

Accepted Answer

The OPTi Plug N Play MPU 401 uses legacy drivers that may be unsigned or 16-bit. Install in Windows 95/98/ME or a VM, or use a signed third-party package; do not expect it to work on 64-bit Windows without compatible drivers.

Question 2

Device not detected / no MIDI port?

Accepted Answer

Enable “Plug and Play OS” in BIOS, then check Device Manager for an unknown OPTi MPU-401 device. Assign a free IRQ and I/O address such as IRQ 5/9 and port 330h, and disable conflicting onboard MIDI/game-port hardware.

Question 3

Version or resource conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Windows may bind its generic MPU-401 driver instead of the OPTi driver. Remove/roll back the generic device, install the OPTi package first, and match the driver’s IRQ/I/O settings to the card’s PnP configuration.
