Question 1

Camera not detected?

Accepted Answer

On the D5100, set Setup Menu > USB to MTP/PTP, use a data-capable USB cable, and connect directly to the PC—not a hub. If Windows shows an unknown device, reconnect and let it install the built-in MTP driver; use Nikon Transfer 2 if import still fails.

Question 2

Driver install fails?

Accepted Answer

Disconnect the camera before installing. Run the Nikon driver/software installer as administrator, temporarily disable antivirus, and reboot. For manual installation, update the device in Device Manager and point it to the extracted driver folder.

Question 3

Version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall older Nikon Transfer/ViewNX and any previous D5100 driver, reboot, then install the latest package before reconnecting the camera. Match 32-bit/64-bit Windows and check Device Manager for error codes 10 or 43.
