Question 1

Install fails on modern Windows?

Accepted Answer

The IBM Proprinter XL24 uses legacy driver files. Run the installer as administrator in compatibility mode for an older Windows version, or use Windows’ built-in “IBM Proprinter” / generic 24-pin dot-matrix driver if the original package is unsigned or 16-bit.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Confirm the printer is connected to a working parallel/LPT port or a USB-to-parallel adapter that supports printing. Enable LPT in BIOS if needed, test the cable, and assign the correct port (usually LPT1) in Printer Properties.

Question 3

Driver version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Remove any existing IBM Proprinter XL24 queues and old driver copies in Print Management, restart the Print Spooler service, then reinstall only one driver package. Avoid mixing generic and vendor drivers for the same port.
