Question 1

Install fails or stops early?

Accepted Answer

Right-click the Compaq SoftPaq/setup file and choose Run as administrator. For older CQ42-166TX drivers, try Windows 7 compatibility mode. Install the chipset driver first, reboot, then graphics, audio, and wireless.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Check Device Manager for unknown devices. For wireless, confirm the WLAN switch/Fn key is on and Wi-Fi is enabled in BIOS. Reinstall the exact CQ42-166TX SoftPaq rather than a generic Windows driver.

Question 3

Version conflicts or broken update?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall the old driver in Programs and Features and remove it in Device Manager (select Delete driver software). Reboot and reinstall the matching 32/64-bit package. If a new driver breaks functionality, use Roll Back Driver or System Restore.
