The Multimedia Video Controller driver helps Windows identify and communicate with compatible video hardware, such as a capture card or TV tuner. Installing the correct driver from the manufacturer can resolve a missing-driver warning in Device Manager and make the hardware’s supported functions available to compatible applications.
Key Features
- Device recognition: Allows Windows to identify the controller correctly instead of listing it as an unknown or unconfigured multimedia device.
- Video hardware communication: Provides the software interface that compatible applications need to access supported video input, capture, or playback functions.
- Model-specific support: Enables features supported by the particular controller, with capabilities depending on the hardware and driver version.
- Windows compatibility: Supports proper operation when the driver package matches your device and your version of Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7. Availability varies by hardware model.
How to Install
- Identify the controller. Open Device Manager and locate Multimedia Video Controller, often shown under Other devices when its driver is missing. Right-click it, select Properties, and check Details > Hardware Ids to help identify the exact hardware.
- Choose the matching driver. Select a package from the manufacturer that matches the controller’s hardware ID, your Windows version, and your system architecture. A generic device name alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.
- Prepare the download. Save the driver package and extract it if it comes in a compressed folder. Close any applications that might use the video hardware before starting installation.
- Install the driver. Run the included setup program and follow its instructions. If the package has no installer, open Device Manager, right-click the controller, select Update driver, and choose Browse my computer for drivers. Point Windows to the extracted folder.
- Restart and verify. Restart your computer if prompted, then check Device Manager for any remaining warning icon. Test the device in a compatible application. If installation fails, recheck the hardware ID and supported operating systems rather than forcing an unrelated driver.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or Device Manager shows Code 28/10: Run the installer as administrator, pause antivirus temporarily, and use Device Manager > Update driver > Browse to the extracted manufacturer package. Reboot before testing capture/video input.
- Device not detected: Confirm the capture/video card or adapter is seated, powered, and enabled in BIOS. In Device Manager, use Scan for hardware changes; install chipset/USB/PCIe drivers first if the controller still does not appear.
- Version conflicts or old driver remains: Uninstall previous capture/tuner/video software and driver, choose Delete the driver software, reboot, then install the current manufacturer version. Avoid mixing Windows Update and OEM drivers; roll back if an update breaks video capture.
