Question 1

Install fails or is blocked?

Accepted Answer

The SM56 driver is older and may be unsigned or incompatible with 64-bit Windows. Run the installer as administrator in Windows 7 compatibility mode, or manually update the modem via Device Manager using the correct 32/64-bit INF.

Question 2

Modem not detected?

Accepted Answer

Check Device Manager for an unknown PCI/AMR device or missing COM port. Reseat the card, enable the modem/onboard device in BIOS, and verify the correct slot or onboard setting.

Question 3

Version conflicts/COM port errors?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall existing Motorola SM56 or generic modem entries, choose “Delete the driver software,” reboot, then install only the matching SM56 driver. If Windows reassigns the COM port, set a free port manually in Modem Properties.
