The Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter is a virtual networking component that allows IPv6 traffic to travel across an IPv4 network using Teredo tunneling. Its driver works with Windows networking services to support applications that need this connectivity, particularly when native IPv6 access is unavailable. Unlike a physical network adapter, it does not require a separate piece of hardware.

Key Features

  • IPv6-over-IPv4 connectivity: Encapsulates IPv6 packets in IPv4 UDP traffic, allowing compatible applications to communicate through networks that do not provide native IPv6.
  • NAT traversal support: Helps establish IPv6 connectivity across many network address translation (NAT) configurations, although firewall rules and router settings can affect availability.
  • Windows integration: Uses Microsoft’s built-in networking components rather than a standalone adapter utility. Teredo support is included in Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, though its configuration and visibility vary.
  • Virtual adapter operation: Provides a software-based interface for Teredo traffic without replacing the driver for your Ethernet or Wi-Fi hardware.

How to Install

  1. Check whether installation is necessary. Teredo is a Windows component, not normally a separate driver download. If your internet connection works and no application reports a Teredo problem, a missing adapter entry in Device Manager may not require action.
  1. Update Windows components. Open Windows Update and install any applicable updates available for your system. Restart afterward if prompted. For Windows 7 and 8, keep in mind that standard support has ended and update availability is limited.
  1. Inspect Device Manager. Expand Network adapters, then select View > Show hidden devices. If Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter appears with a warning, open its properties and note the error code before attempting a repair.
  1. Use the built-in installation option where available. On older Windows versions, Device Manager’s Action > Add legacy hardware wizard may offer Network adapters > Microsoft > Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter. Follow the prompts if it is listed. This option may be absent on Windows 10 or 11; do not substitute an unrelated driver or force an unofficial package.
  1. Restart and verify connectivity. Test the application that requires Teredo. You can also run `netsh interface teredo show state` in Command Prompt to inspect its status. Persistent issues may involve firewall settings, network policy, or router restrictions rather than a missing driver.
