The Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor driver supports a virtual networking component used to coordinate multiple physical network adapters in compatible teaming configurations. Unlike a standard Ethernet or Wi-Fi driver, it works alongside the drivers for your physical adapters rather than replacing them. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, check compatibility carefully: availability and teaming support depend on the Windows edition and network configuration, not just the operating system version.

Key Features

  • Virtual adapter support: Provides the Windows networking interface used by supported configurations that group physical network adapters.
  • Traffic coordination: Helps handle network traffic across participating adapters when a compatible team has been configured.
  • Integration with Windows networking: Works with Microsoft networking services and the underlying Ethernet adapter drivers.
  • Support for specialized network setups: Can participate in configurations designed for connection resilience or traffic distribution, where the operating system and hardware support those functions.

How to Install

  1. Confirm that this component is needed. Open Device Manager and inspect the entries under Network adapters. If you are troubleshooting a normal Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, update the physical adapter’s driver first; the Multiplexor component is not a general-purpose fix for connectivity problems.
  1. Check your Windows configuration. Identify your Windows version, edition, and system architecture in System settings. Before downloading anything, confirm that the package explicitly supports your setup. A listing for Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7 does not establish that every edition supports adapter teaming.
  1. Use Windows servicing first. Check Windows Update for applicable updates, including optional driver updates where available. Microsoft networking components are generally supplied and maintained with Windows, so a separate Multiplexor download may not be necessary.
  1. Install a verified package only if applicable. If you have a compatible, digitally signed driver package, extract it and follow its instructions. For a package intended for Device Manager installation, right-click the relevant adapter, choose Update driver, and select Browse my computer for drivers. Do not force an incompatible driver onto another device.
  1. Restart if prompted and verify operation. Check Device Manager for warnings and test the intended network connection. Only enable or configure multiplexing through a supported networking setup; leave the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol unchecked on an ordinary standalone connection unless your configuration requires it.
