The Microsoft OHCI 1394 Compliant Host Controller driver enables Windows to communicate with compatible IEEE 1394, also known as FireWire, hardware. It supports the connection between your computer’s 1394 controller and devices such as digital camcorders, external storage drives, and audio interfaces.

Key Features

  • FireWire controller support: Allows Windows to recognize and operate an OHCI-compatible IEEE 1394 host controller.
  • Peripheral communication: Provides the controller-level support needed for data transfers with compatible FireWire equipment. Some peripherals may also require their own drivers or software.
  • Windows integration: Works with Device Manager so you can check controller status, view driver details, and troubleshoot connection problems.
  • Support across Windows versions: Driver options cover Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP. Choose the package intended for your specific operating system and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

How to Install

  1. Identify your controller and Windows version. Open Device Manager and look under “IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers.” If the controller appears as an unknown device, check its hardware IDs in Properties before selecting a download.
  2. Choose a matching driver. Confirm that the package supports your controller, Windows release, and system architecture. Windows may already include a suitable Microsoft driver, so a separate download is not always necessary.
  3. Prepare the files. Download the appropriate package and extract it if it is compressed. Disconnect attached FireWire peripherals before updating the controller driver.
  4. Install the driver. Run the supplied installer, if available. Otherwise, right-click the controller in Device Manager, select the driver update option, and browse to the extracted driver folder.
  5. Restart and test. Restart Windows if prompted, reconnect your FireWire device, and check that the controller has no warning icon in Device Manager.

If a connected device still does not work, check its power supply, cable, and manufacturer-specific software requirements. Older FireWire equipment may need a different controller driver option; use a legacy driver only when it is supported by your Windows version and recommended for the hardware.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or Code 10/28: Use the built-in Microsoft “IEEE 1394 Host Controller” driver via Device Manager → Update driver → Browse → Let me pick. Avoid old OEM 1394 packages and run Windows Update.
  • Device not detected: Check the FireWire cable and port, confirm the attached device is powered, enable 1394 in BIOS if present, then use Device Manager → Scan for hardware changes. Try another PCI/PCIe slot if needed.
  • Version conflicts or Code 31: Uninstall third-party 1394 drivers and ghost OHCI controllers, reboot, and let Windows reinstall the Microsoft OHCI driver.
