The Akai MPD24 from AKAI Professional is a USB MIDI pad controller used to trigger samples, program beats, and control music software. Its driver connection lets Windows receive MIDI messages from the pads, knobs, and faders so your application can respond to your performance. When setting it up on Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, check whether Windows already recognizes the controller before installing a separate driver.

Key Features

  • USB MIDI communication: Allows compatible music applications to receive performance and control messages from the MPD24 over USB.
  • Pad and control input: Carries velocity-sensitive pad hits and controller messages for drum programming, instrument playing, and parameter adjustments.
  • Software integration: Makes the controller available as a MIDI input in compatible digital audio workstations and standalone music applications.
  • Windows device recognition: The MPD24 supports class-compliant USB MIDI operation, so Windows may use its built-in driver rather than require a dedicated AKAI installer.

How to Install

  1. Check your Windows version. Confirm whether you are using Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7. If a separate download is offered, verify that its documentation explicitly covers the Akai MPD24 and your operating system; do not assume an older package supports newer Windows releases.
  2. Connect the controller. Attach the MPD24 directly to a USB port on your computer using a suitable USB cable. Allow Windows to detect the device and complete any automatic driver setup.
  3. Install additional software only if required. If the controller is not recognized and a compatible manufacturer-provided driver is available, follow that package’s instructions. Disconnect or reconnect the MPD24 when prompted, and restart Windows if requested.
  4. Enable MIDI input in your application. Open your music software’s MIDI settings, select the MPD24’s input port, and enable it for the instrument or track you want to control. Assign knobs and faders using the application’s MIDI mapping tools.
  5. Test the connection. Load a drum instrument and tap a pad. If nothing responds, check the selected MIDI input, track monitoring, and pad assignments before reinstalling drivers.

The MPD24 sends MIDI data, not audio. Sound playback and recording depend on your computer’s audio device and its own driver settings.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Installer fails or rolls back: Run the Akai MPD24 driver/editor installer as Administrator and in compatibility mode for its supported Windows version. Unblock the downloaded file, disconnect the MPD24 until prompted, and reboot before retrying. Remove older Akai MPD24 entries in Apps & Features first.
  • MPD24 not detected: Use a known-good USB cable and a rear motherboard USB 2.0 port, not a hub. Check Device Manager for “Unknown USB Device” or MIDI entries, reconnect, and rescan MIDI in your DAW. If it shows only as unknown, reinstall the Akai USB-MIDI driver.
  • Driver/version conflicts: Uninstall old Akai MPD24 driver/editor versions and duplicate MIDI entries, reboot, then install the newest Windows-compatible package. In the DAW, disable/enable or rescan the MPD24 MIDI input; avoid running two Akai editor/driver versions together.
