The Microsoft Virtual AVC Device driver helps Windows recognize and manage a virtual audio/video control (AV/C) interface associated with IEEE 1394, commonly known as FireWire. It supports communication within the Windows 1394 device stack, helping compatible hardware and software use the control interface correctly.
Key Features
- AV/C interface recognition: Identifies the Virtual AVC Device in Windows so the operating system can associate it with the appropriate driver components.
- IEEE 1394 integration: Works within the FireWire device environment used by certain digital camcorders, audio/video equipment, and related interfaces.
- Device control support: Provides a driver-level connection for compatible AV/C functions. Available controls depend on the connected equipment and application.
- Windows compatibility: Driver options cover Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP. Select a package that matches your Windows version and system architecture, where applicable.
How to Install
- Check your system and device details. Confirm your Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Open Device Manager and locate Virtual AVC Device or the unidentified device associated with your 1394 equipment. If the name is unclear, check its hardware IDs under Properties.
- Choose a matching driver. Download the Microsoft driver package intended for your operating system and device hardware ID. Windows may already include a suitable driver, so check Windows Update or Device Manager’s automatic driver search before installing manually.
- Prepare the download. Extract the files if the package is compressed. Keep the extracted folder accessible, and leave compatible FireWire equipment connected and powered on if it is needed for device detection.
- Install through Device Manager. Right-click the device and select the driver update option. Choose to browse your computer for driver software, point Windows to the extracted folder, and follow the prompts. On Windows XP, use the corresponding Hardware Update Wizard options. Do not force installation if Windows reports that the driver is incompatible.
- Verify operation. Restart if prompted, then return to Device Manager to check for warning icons. Test the connected equipment in its intended application. If problems remain, check the FireWire connection and 1394 host controller driver as well; the Virtual AVC Device driver does not replace every component required by your audio/video hardware.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails with Code 10/28 or “driver unavailable”: A conflicting virtual camera (e.g., OBS Virtual Camera) or stale Microsoft virtual capture driver is likely present. Uninstall old virtual camera entries in Device Manager, reboot, then run the driver installer as administrator.
- Virtual AVC Device not detected by apps: Confirm it is enabled under Cameras or Imaging devices in Device Manager, check Settings > Privacy > Camera access
