The VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller driver allows Windows to communicate with a compatible VIA FireWire controller and manage devices connected through its IEEE 1394 ports. Provided by Microsoft, this driver supports the host controller rather than a specific peripheral, helping Windows recognize and use compatible FireWire equipment such as digital camcorders, external drives, and audio interfaces.

Key Features

  • IEEE 1394 connectivity: Enables communication between Windows and compatible devices connected to the controller’s FireWire ports.
  • OHCI support: Works with compatible VIA hardware that follows the Open Host Controller Interface standard for IEEE 1394 controllers.
  • Windows integration: Uses Microsoft’s driver framework to support controller detection, device enumeration, and data transfers.
  • Support across Windows versions: Driver versions are available for Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP. Select the version that matches your operating system and system architecture.

How to Install

  1. Confirm your hardware and Windows version. Open Device Manager and look under “IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers” for the VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller. If it appears as an unknown device, check its hardware IDs before selecting a driver. Also confirm whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  1. Choose a compatible driver package. Download a driver intended for your Windows version and controller. Windows may already include a suitable Microsoft driver, so a separate download is not always necessary.
  1. Prepare for the update. Finish any active FireWire transfers and disconnect external FireWire devices when safe to do so. Extract the downloaded files if they are supplied in an archive.
  1. Install through Device Manager. Right-click the controller and select the driver update option. Choose to browse your computer for driver software, then point Windows to the extracted folder. If the package includes an installer, follow its instructions instead. Do not force installation if Windows reports that the driver is incompatible.
  1. Restart and test the connection. Restart Windows if prompted, then check that the controller appears without a warning icon in Device Manager. Reconnect your FireWire device and test it in the appropriate application.

Some FireWire peripherals require their own drivers or software in addition to the host controller driver. If a connected device remains unavailable, check its requirements, cable connection, and power supply before changing the controller driver again.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or rolls back: The VIA/Microsoft 1394 OHCI package may be unsigned or incompatible with current Windows. Use the inbox Microsoft 1394 OHCI driver instead: Device Manager > Update driver > Browse > Let me pick > IEEE 1394 host controller. Avoid forcing an older VIA package.
  • Controller not detected: Reseat the PCI/PCIe FireWire card, try another slot, confirm BIOS hasn’t disabled it, and check Device Manager for hidden or unknown devices. Run “Scan for hardware changes” and test another FireWire cable/port.
  • Version/driver conflict (Code 10/28/39): Uninstall the device and delete its driver package, restart, then let Windows re
